The Version 6.0 global average lower tropospheric temperature (LT) anomaly for February, 2019 was +0.36 deg. C, essentially unchanged from the January, 2019 value of +0.37 deg. C

 

The sun has just passed an entire calendar month with no sunspots. The last time this happened, in August 2008, the sun was in the nadir of a century-class Solar Minimum. The current stretch of blank suns shows that Solar Minimum has returned, and it could be as deep as the last one.

Cosmic rays in Earth’s atmosphere are intensifying for the 4th year in a row as the 11-year solar cycle plunges into one of the deepest minima of the Space Age. The finding comes from a campaign of almost weekly high-altitude balloon launches conducted by the students of Earth to Sky Calculus, Dr. Tony Phillips of SpaceWeather reports.

A strong earthquake registered by the USGS as M7.0 hit southern Peru at 08:50 UTC on March 1, 2019. The agency is reporting a depth of 257.4 km (159.9 miles). EMSC is reporting the same magnitude and depth. This earthquake can have a low humanitarian impact based on the magnitude and the affected population and their vulnerability. 

 

Major floods inundate 2 000 homes and buildings, California

Russian River at Guerneville crested with a preliminary height of 13.83 m (45.38 feet) at 22:00 PST, Wednesday, February 27, 2019. Major flooding continued Thursday morning but the river is expected to slowly recede through the day and fall below flood stage of Friday morning (local time).

 

Dozens of homes damaged after tornado hits Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia

A damaging tornado hit the village of Liliba near the city of Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia around 13:00 local time Thursday, February 28, 2019.

“A number of houses and some other structures were damaged. Almost all of the roof of their houses were destroyed,” one of the residents said. Other residents said dozens of homes have been damaged

Whiteout conditions cause 4 multi-vehicle pileups in Ontario, Canada

Whiteout conditions on Highway 400 between Highway 89 and Mapleview Drive near Barrie, Ontario caused a major multi-vehicle pileup around 10:00 local time on February 25, 2019. The highway was reopened several hours after the crash and only minor injuries have been reported. Three other pileups took place in the province on the same day, one resulted in several serious injuries.

Nashville’s wettest February on record, 3 killed in Tennessee floods

The city of Nashville in Tennesse experienced its wettest February on record, NWS reports. This month was also its 7th wettest month of all time. Floods caused by the latest storm to hit the state left at least 3 people dead.

Winter Storm Scott to Spread Snow From the West Coast to the Northeast This Weekend into Early Next Week

  • Winter Storm Scott will arrive in California Friday night with rain and Sierra Nevada snow.
  • Snow will spread eastward this weekend across the Rockies, central Plains and Ohio Valley.
  • This system will then spawn an area of low pressure near the Northeast coast.
  • The track of Scott will determine what areas in the Northeast see significant snow.
