Snow, hail, rain, lightning and the potential for mudslides hit parts of California and the Southwest on Wednesday, snarling traffic and leading to the evacuation of several beaches in the Los Angeles area.

Over the Vail Pass in Colorado, the Colorado State Patrol announced Wednesday afternoon that both directions of Interstate 70 were closed because of crashes and spinouts that blocked the roadway. The westbound lanes reopened about an hour later, but the eastbound lanes remained closed.
